BASF Group releases preliminary figures for the second quarter of 2022

BASF has released preliminary data for the second quarter of 2022. Sales in the second quarter of 2022 increased by 16% to EUR 22,974 million (Q2 2021: EUR 19,753 million). This was mainly due to higher prices, as well as the positive impact of currency factors, mainly driven by the U.S. dollar. Sales were down slightly compared to the same period last year. Sales in the second quarter of 2022 were higher than the average analyst forecast (Vara: 21.737 billion euros).

EBIT before special items in the second quarter of 2022 is expected to be EUR 2,339 million, almost the same as the same period last year (Q2 2021: EUR 2,355 million) and significantly higher than the average analyst forecast for the second quarter of 2022 ( Vara: 2.092 billion euros). Rising raw material and energy prices pushed product prices up further.

Second-quarter 2022 EBIT before special items exceeded analysts’ average forecasts, except for Nutrition and Care. EBIT before special items in the Agricultural Solutions, Chemicals and Surface Technology business areas was significantly higher than the average analyst estimate; EBIT before special items in the Nutrition and Care business area was slightly lower than analysts’ estimates Average expectations. EBIT before special items in the “Other” business area narrowed sharply from the average analyst estimate.

The BASF Group’s EBIT in the second quarter of 2022 is expected to be EUR 2.350 billion, slightly higher than the same period last year (Q2 2021: EUR 2.316 billion) and significantly higher than the analyst consensus for the second quarter of 2022 (Vara: 2.012 billion euros).

Net income is expected to reach EUR 2.090 billion, well above the same period last year (Q2 2021: EUR 1.654 billion) and significantly higher than the average analyst forecast for the second quarter of 2022 (Vara: EUR 1.408 billion). Compared to the same period last year, this significant increase was mainly attributable to holdings of Wintershall
Dea’s equity investment income increased.

The BASF Group’s forecast for the 2022 financial year remains unchanged for the time being.
