At K, explore Clariant’s additive solutions to support plastics in addressing key EV challenges, helping the automotive industry safely increase battery range, improve charging performance, enable material reuse and recycling, and reduce carbon footprint (Hall 8a J11 booth).

Nicola, Director of Strategic Marketing, Clariant Additives
“We are working closely with our customers down the automotive chain to validate our advanced plastic additive technology and advance their focus on weight optimization, sustainable, recyclable materials, CO2 reduction, and performance and safety needs,” said Lelli. Looking forward to 2022
Visitors to K show a new collaboration around our flame retardants and high-performance additives, which will support the industry’s sustainable transformation in design and production, unlocking the potential of electric vehicles. ”

Clariant’s support for sustainable plastic materials for electric vehicles includes new applications of our trusted halogen-free flame retardants in solutions based on polyamides and other thermoplastics, while offering ISCC-certified
Plus certified options for products based on renewable raw materials to reduce reliance on fossil raw materials and reduce product CO2 emissions. These are “Terra” series certified products that provide manufacturers with a convenient alternative to similar products.

Usefire retardants with lower greenhouse gas emissions to help increasecharging speed

The trend of charging at higher voltages for faster charging is creating new demands for battery and charging infrastructure materials that are required to have higher tracking resistance and flame retardancy.

Manufacturers of high voltage connectors, busbars or battery housings can now use the new Terra version of the Exolit® OP 1400, which is patented by Clariant A protective, halogen-free flame retardant widely used in polyamide systems to help achieve industry goals for faster charging and lower greenhouse gas emitting materials.

Exolit OP Terra enables polyamide materials to pass stringent fire safety standards such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 94 V0 and compliance with IEC 60112 / ASTMD
3638 standard 600V relative tracking index (CTI).

The OP solution, which has received the Clariant EcoTain® certification label and is also a mass balance certified product, is now generally available on the market. Like their fossil carbon-based counterparts, Terra-grade flame retardants have little impact on the recyclability of the material, thus technically supporting proper automotive waste management and contributing to a reduced CO2 footprint. Clariant is currently building a new flame retardant production site in Daya Bay, China, to meet the rapidly growing demand for electric vehicles and electrical and electronic components and equipment industries in China and Asia.

Lightweight battery housing made of sustainable flame retardant thermoset composites

Exolit
AP halogen-free flame retardants are driving the transition from metals to low-density, high-strength thermoset composites for lighter battery casings that can meet the stringent fire safety standards for electric vehicles. Batteries require special protection in the event of a vehicle fire or thermal runaway of the battery.

Clariant offers three grades of flame retardants – Exolit AP 462, AP 740 and AP 742, enabling epoxy or unsaturated polyester based composites to comply with ECE R100 and GB
38031-2020 Flame Retardant Standard.

Optimize PlasticsProducts for Electric Vehicle Range and End-of-Life VehiclesVehicle MaterialsRecycling Maximize rate

Meet our team at K to discuss optimizing key vehicle plastic components such as PP plastic rear bumpers, PP plastic interior trim such as instrument panels and door panels, and various engineering plastic components to increase electric vehicle range and support scrapping Recycling and sustainability goals for cars.

In addition, Clariant is proud to be involved in the EU-funded 3-year ‘Transform’ project to develop lightweight vehicle components and improve recyclability by promoting the recycling of materials and the use of recycled polymers. The Additives team is helping to validate and develop solutions to push plastic materials beyond current performance and sustainability boundaries and help meet minimum recycling targets for vehicle plastic components in upcoming EU legislation. Clariant’s solutions include additives to maintain high-quality polymer recyclates, and additives to increase the recycling percentage of finished lightweight recyclable parts.
